How do I Become a Home Inspector?

Housing Inspection Foundation (HIF) has thoroughly reviewed and accredited a list of training sites on the web, as well as correspondence and live classes to offer you the choice of either traditional learning in a classroom setting or distance education.

By choosing to pursue your education through a school, you will receive personalized attention suited to your learning style. In some states, you are required to complete a certain number of classroom hours, which will dictate what learning method you choose.

Does my state regulate this industry?

Regulation of this market is in place or on the horizon. Currently, over a dozen states require pre-licensing education for home inspectors, and continuing education courses.

Do Home Inspectors just inspect homes?

Home inspectors with talent and ambition can expand their business services to include commercial inspection and expert witness testimony. Radon, lead-based paint, septic systems, mold, and indoor air testing are just a few of the services that home inspections can provide for additional fees. Plus, the financial investment and overhead needed to run a home inspection business are minimal, making this a lucrative small business opportunity.

Professional Membership and the Home Inspector

To begin your career, an important part of being a Home Inspector is membership in the Housing Inspection Foundation (HIF).

Qualification: RHI and CCI require certification by a school, licensing by your state of residence if required or 2-3 years of experience.
